Staff Testimonials

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to work at Kabeyun and be a part of the summer adventure. I wasn’t totally sure what I was letting myself in for when I signed up, but my time with you more than exceeded my expectations. My initial thoughts when I saw my living arrangements and what was required of me were disbelief and shock. Never had I been put in an environment where I would be subjected to such an array of personalities, issues, highs and lows, energy and responsibility! However, thanks to you and your staff, I gained the ability and confidence to deal with whatever was put in front of me. The experiences that stand out in my mind the most are firstly when I made my first big announcement in the dining hall for the Kabeyun Olympics. I was so nervous, and worried beforehand that I nearly didn’t do it. However, as soon as I sat down having announced the activity, one of the kids sitting next to me tapped me on the shoulder and said ‘great job.’ The second occasion that really took me by surprise was on the final day. It was visiting day and I had been working with a load of kids on their ‘mates’ and this one kid took out his Mother in a sunfish for the first time having gained his Mate status. He was way out on the lake and he capsized. As I stood on the dock I watched rather worryingly as his Mother scrambled around in the water. However, without hesitation the kid put into practice everything I had taught him and got the boat back up, got his Mother back in the boat and continued to sail as if nothing had happened. On return to the dock he still had a big grin on his face and I thought to myself without the teaching I had given him he probably wouldn’t have been able to do that, especially still with a smile on his face. His Mother on the other hand was slightly frazzled but unharmed! Kabeyun is quite a special place. I hope next year the wind is ‘Hoofing’ for everyone to enjoy. Thanks once again.”

“My overall experience was excellent. My coworkers and their attitudes towards me were positive and helpful from day one, and my work was extremely rewarding and enjoyable. The "senior staff" were all very helpful, and were more than willing to give appropriate feedback (both positive and negative) at the appropriate time. I felt like I had a lot of freedom and flexibility in how to approach my own job, but also always felt that Chuck and the other administrative staff where aware of and pleased with what I was doing.”

“The most positive aspect of my Kabeyun experience was working with the staff. They worked hard and also helped me feel welcome.”

“The incredible camaraderie between campers and staff, and amongst the staff itself... this is why we all come back. The triumphs and struggles of the campers, and any moments I could contribute positively to those activities. The sense that my kids were having an even better time than me - camp, after all, is for them. I'd say the 'support' present in camp is the most positive, dearly treasured aspect of Kabeyun.”

“I found that the camaraderie amongst the staff to be the most positive aspect of the experience. It felt like we all understood just how hard each of us was working, and we supported each other through the bumps. I also loved to wake up to assembly and have 2 or 3 kids run up to me with a smiling face, made every morning worth it!”

“The overall atmosphere at Kabeyun is incredibly peaceful. I appreciate the respect both campers and staff have for each other. I think Chuck does a great job in allowing the counselors to develop their own programs. Everyone seemed to take pride in the work they were doing. I appreciate how much history and tradition Kabeyun honors. I quickly came to see myself as apart of a much bigger experience than what was directly around me. This must be a large factor in how much respect show.”

“I have never been in such a positive place! It was a great even with all the rain.”
